Welcome
Welcome to the Lerwick Boating Club website. I hope you find something on the site that interests you!
Over the last 25 years or so the club has changed from the days when it only organised summer sailing races for Shetland models and a regatta. We still have these today, but in addition we have yacht races, dinghy races, a yoal rowing team and lots of training sessions for beginners, junior members and adult members.
We are always looking to welcome new members to the club, and hope this site gives you some idea of both the water-based and shore-based social activities that are based at the club.
Our training activities are a big commitment for the club, involving a lot of volunteers and helpers besides the instructors themselves. This is because training is seen as essential nowadays, giving a proper grounding in sailing and boating, especially to the young.
Training is done under the umbrella of the Royal Yachting Association, and they can provide qualifications which go all the way up to Ocean Yacht-master, in effect creating real career opportunities for a young person. Its nice to see the results of the training, and our young sailors are some of the keenest in the club. After an extremely effective fund-raising campaign, they are now equipped with four brand new Mirror dinghies which will enable them to compete at national level.
With the races, the training and International yacht races - including the Shetland-Bergen and Round Britain races - we can cram a lot into a short summer season, not forgetting social events like the jazz sessions and barbecues. In addition we are always busy with visiting yachts, whose crews use our shower, clothes washing/drying and bar facilities.
Once summer is past, mind you, there's always plenty going on over the winter. We have pool and darts teams, quiz nights, 500 card nights, along with the occasional musical evening and special functions. Membership of the club is open to anybody interested in what happens on the water - you don’t even have to own a boat - or have set foot in one. We will soon get you started!
To join the club all you need to do is complete an application form, available from the clubhouse or click here. There's an annual membership fee of course, but we have special discounted membership rates for families, retired persons, juniors and disabled persons. We can also offer associate membership of the club to other users of the water, such as sea anglers, sailboarders, kayakers and divers.
Should you wish to see anything else on the site, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us, click here.
Happy boating
